The Great Giveaway
27 April 2005
The directors and staff of Common Grounds would like to thank all their customers, and the artists who have been kind enough to donate their time and talent to raise money for charity over the last six months.Since we opened in September, we have hosted gigs by Duke Special, Ken Haddock, Jennifer Jones, Handsome Gaz, Belfast Community Circus and a multitude of others. In that time we have raised £1000 for a water project in Malawi, £500 for Extern, and most recently, £550 (through donations only – our mathematicians still have to work out what our profits have been for the last three months!) for M’Lop T’pang, a Cambodian street kids charity.
From now until June, all monies raised will be going to an educational project in Swaziland. The most pressing needs are furnishings for two classrooms, but we would also like to help the Forbes Reef school to kit out a domestic science room, and to replace faulty pipework from the nearby dam so that the school can have a water supply. Depending on how much we raise, we might even be able to help the school be wired for electricity.
Of course this all depends on your continued support. Thanks for all the coffee and food you’ve bought already. If you haven’t visited us yet we are on the corner of Carmel Street and University Avenue, diagonally opposite the Spar.
Also, we are hoping to get something really special organised for our first birthday party in September.
We are the Robin Hood of coffee shops…
